Via Air Mail

I have always been fascinated with the idea of all the old love letters and other mail that crossed the oceans during the World Wars.  I love getting letters and I love to think about all the beautiful words and heartfelt sentiments that were in all those old air mail envelopes.  When I saw these free air mail envelope downloads, I knew right away I wanted to use one to create a bulletin board.  (By the way, they also have some really cool old post card downloads).

I used Citra Solv to transfer the postage onto some linen fabric and then covered an old canvas from a yard sale with it.  I added the red and blue design to the edges and that was it.  A pretty simple project.

This gem is going into my booth at Old Salem Mercantile this week.
I’m sure there are tons of other things you can do with these old envelope designs.  I’m thinking a lampshade could be really cool.  In a linen fabric with the postage on front and the blue/red around the top and bottom.  I might just have to try that.

Has anyone else done any vintage mail inspired projects?  Any other great ideas?  I’d love to hear them.

Wow super cute! I have a cousin in Norway who used to send all her letters to me with these type of envelops. We had the oppurtunity to see each other 2 years ago, she still had my letters with the plain envelopes and I still had hers with the red and blue! I used to look so forward to those envelopes being delivered!

Great question Fraya, I’m not sure why I didn’t share this in the original post but the red and blue edging was done using red and blue fabric markers. I used a straight edge to draw each red or blue section and then went back and filled them in with the marker.
