Why you should pinpoint your style

When I started this blog, I was totally focused on how much I love all things vintage and saving vintage treasures. But whenever I described my style, I felt like I had to give a million explanations of how I love decorating with vintage items but not in a stuffy or junky way and with lots of updated, handmade type items and fresh colors….

And when I sat back and really thought about it, I realized that while I really like vintage stuff, I wouldn’t actually describe my style as vintage.  Yikes!  Here I was with a DIY blog and no idea what my style actually was – how embarrassing. 

(Not to mention vintage isn’t really a style anyway.  Cottage, midcentury modern, French provencial, primitive, art deco – those are styles.  Vintage just means kind of old – so it pretty much includes a few hundred years of different styles.)

Which put me back at square one – what is my style? But before I can answer that, another question comes to mind - why do I even care what it is?

 

3 reasons to figure out your decorating style

1. So that when you come in your front door and look around, you smile and breathe a sigh of happiness because you are truly home.
2. So that when you are trying to decorate a room in your home, you have a starting point and aren't pulling out your hair in frustration at the overwhelming amount of choices.
3. So you don’t buy some random thing because it is so cool and an incredible find and you saw it in this totally awesome room on Pinterest. And then you get home and realize you actually hate it.

Okay, so I can definitely see the point of figuring out what it is that you truly love.  (Although I’m not yet convinced that it is important to know the technical name of the style you love as long as you know what it looks like).  But that still leaves the question – how do you figure out what that actually is?
