CLEAN THE VANITY

CLEAN THE VANITY

The first step with any furniture painting project is to clean the piece. I use either Krud Kutter or Dawn and water.

REMOVE THE DOORS AND DRAWERS

REMOVE THE DOORS AND DRAWERS

Start by removing the doors and drawers. It makes it so much easier to paint.

DETERMINE THE HARDWARE

DETERMINE THE HARDWARE

Decide whether you will be replacing the hardware. If so, determine if the current holes will work or if you need to drill new holes. Fill in the old holes with wood filler if necessary.

USE SPACKLE TO COVER WOOD GRAIN

USE SPACKLE TO COVER WOOD GRAIN

The trick to getting rid of the wood grain is spackle! The same spackling you use to fill in little nail holes on your walls. Use a small putty knife to smooth it out. Let dry. *If you are painting bathroom cabinets that do not have a highly textured wood grain, you can skip this section*

SAND THE SPACKLE

Sand all of the excess off using 220 grit sandpaper. Wipe away the dust using a microfiber cloth or other rag. The spackling will be left only in the tiny crevices of the wood grain!

PRIME IF NEEDED The kind of prep you need to do for your cabinets depends on two main things. 1. The kind of cabinets you’re painting and the condition they’re in. 2. What kind of paint you are using to paint them.

WHEN TO PRIME If your cabinets are super slick, primer is important to help the paint stick.  Also, if your cabinets are dark wood and you’re painting them a light color, primer is a great idea. Lastly, if your cabinets have been painted before with oil-based paint, you need to use an oil-based primer first.

USE GOOD PAINTBRUSHES It's important to use really good paintbrushes and rollers. Cheaper brushes will leave behind loose bristles and make it nearly impossible to get a smooth finish.

PAINTING YOUR BATHROOM VANITY Now it's time to paint! Use a paintbrush to cut in around the edges of your cabinets with long smooth strokes rather than lots of short, choppy ones.

FINISH WITH A ROLLER Fill in the large flat surfaces with the paint roller. Make sure there is enough paint on your roller that you don’t have to put much pressure on the roller to paint. Let dry. Add 2nd coat.

SEALING THE VANITY You do not always have to protect painted cabinets with a sealer or topcoat, but I know we’re going to be opening and closing these doors and cabinets every single day. So I used my favorite sealer; I use it on furniture all the time. General Finishes High Performance Topcoat.

ADD THE HARDWARE The final step is to  replace or reattach any hardware you removed. It may take up to thirty days for the top coat to fully cure or harden, so be gentle with it! Now you are done and have a beautifully smooth painted vanity.
