EASY DIY CLOSET SHELVES

Do you have a small closet that isn't working for you? I may have a solution with these DIY closet shelves. They are cheap and inexpensive to make even if you aren't an experienced DIY'er. Plus, you can adjust the measurements to fit any closet size.

MATERIALS

MATERIALS

– Sheet of MDF – 1"x2" pine board  – 1"x2" poplar boards – 220 grit sandpaper – Caulk – Spackle – Paint – White paint – Small foam paint roller and paint brush TOOLS – Miter saw or circular saw nail gun  stud finder level tape measure

HOW TO BUILD CLOSET SHELVES Remove everything from the closet including the old shelves. Patch any holes in the walls with spackle. Give the interior of the closet a fresh coat of paint if needed.

CUT THE SHELVES Cut the strips of MDF to the correct length for your shelves. If you don't have a power saw, you can have all the cuts done at the store when you purchase your supplies.

CUT SIDE SUPPORTS Cut two side supports for each shelf from 1"x2" pine boards 14" long or the depth of your shelves. Attach the side support to the side walls of the closet by nailing them into the studs.

If you are building simple shelves rather than cubbies, you also need a long shelf support. Cut another 1"x2" board to the length of your shelves minus three inches. Make sure it is level then screw it to the studs along the back wall.

ADD A SHELF SUPPORT

To create the cubby dividers, cut more MDF to size. Each cubby divider should be the height of your shelves x the depth of your shelves.

CREATE CUBBY DIVIDERS

Add poplar facing for a finishing touch. This is optional, but really makes a difference. The final step is to fill in the nail holes with spackling and caulk all of the seams.

ADD POPLAR FACING

ADD STORAGE CUBES Finally I added DIY fabric storage cubes from inexpensive white plastic baskets from Target.

FILL THE CLOSET The closet is filled with all of the boys’ things with clothes in the fabric bins, shoes and accessories in the plastic bins, a large basket to toss clothes in as they outgrow them, a basket full of puzzles and extra storage on the high shelf.
