HOW TO TURN IKEA BOOKSHELVES INTO BUILT-INS I used four 31″ wide white Billy bookshelves and three 15 3/4″ wide white Billy bookshelves. Start by removing the back of the bookshelves.

PREPARE THE WALL Before moving the bookshelves into place, go ahead and paint the wall behind to match.

DETERMINE THE PLACEMENT OF YOUR BOOKSHELVES Once the wall is painted, move the bookshelves into position and secure them to the wall.

ADD TRIM TO CONNECT YOUR BOOKSHELVES Attach the bookshelves together along the bottom by nailing a 1″x4″ board to the bottom shelf.

ADD WOOD TO ENCASE YOUR BOOKSHELVES Cover the open space between the ends of the bookshelves and the walls to make this a true wall-to-wall built-in. Nail them into a stud if possible.

Now to fully enclose the bookshelves close the open space between the bookshelf and the ceiling. Cut mdf or plywood to fit this area.

FINISH THE BUILT INS WITH MOLDING, CAULK, AND PAINT Caulk all of the seams. Use wood filler to fill in any nail holes, sand smooth, and paint everything your ‘IKEA white’ paint.
