This simple trick makes it super easy to hang art, lights, and holiday decor on exterior vinyl siding without leaving any holes or damage behind.
One of the best things you can do to make any porch space look pulled together (and less like an afterthought) is hang art on the walls. Most of us know how to hang art on interior walls, but hanging art on exterior surfaces can be a bit more confusing.
Luckily, hanging art on vinyl siding is actually incredibly easy. In fact, I would argue it’s even easier than hanging art on regular old drywall!
I recently hung some old mirrors and a few wall planters on our back porch walls and I’m loving how they look. This is also a great way to hang seasonal and holiday directions on the exterior of your house.

When you want to hang things on your vinyl siding, you don’t need a hammer or a drill. In fact you don’t need any tools at all! And no, you also don’t need to put any holes in your siding.
Instead, you just need these inexpensive vinyl siding hooks.
There are quite a few different brands available and they all do basically the same thing. The only real difference I’ve seen is that some are more heavy-duty than others and can hold more weight. Personally, I used these vinyl hooks because they can hold up to 18 lbs of weight, while most of the other options could only hold up to 12 lbs.
How to hang things on vinyl siding
Using these hooks is super simple. Hold the hook perpendicular to the wall and slip the curved end under a bottom seam of your vinyl sliding.
Once it is in place, lower the hook to be flush to the wall. And that’s it!
These hooks work for pretty much any type of horizontal vinyl siding including dutch lap, traditional lap, and beaded lap siding. They also work on most horizontal aluminum siding.
Tip: I found that it’s sometimes easier to slip the siding hook into the picture hanger on the back of your art before hanging it on the wall. That way you don’t have to fumble around behind your art, trying to line up your picture hanger perfectly with the hook.
Later if you want to remove your items, simply lift the hook and remove. There will be absolutely no holes or damage left behind!
Adjusting the placement of art on vinyl siding
When using vinyl siding hooks, it’s super easy to adjust your decorations from side to side simply by lifting the hook back up perpendicular to the wall and sliding it to one side or the other.
On the other hand, it isn’t nearly as easy to adjust the height of your art since you are limited to hanging hooks where your siding seams are.
Most of the time it isn’t a big deal if your art is a few inches higher or lower than you’d like. But if you are hanging several things together, wonky spacing between items can make the whole thing look off.
In the photo below, the mirrors on the left are fine, but you can tell the spacing is a bit awkward. The right photo shows the final arrangement after making a few quick adjustments to even things up. I know it’s a subtle change, but it really make a big difference in making things look intentional.
Since you are only able to hang the hooks where your siding seams are, to adjust the height of your art, you’ll need to adjust the height of the picture hangers or wire.
The mirror below originally had a small picture hanger near the top but it made the mirror hang too low. To fix it, I added a picture wire a bit lower to hang it with.
And that’s it! If only every time I wanted to hang art on the wall, it was this fast and easy!
