Our Classic Halloween Front Porch full of Easy Decorating Ideas

Our classic Halloween front porch full of simple Halloween decorating ideas.

This year I had so much fun decorating our front porch for Halloween for the first time ever. Even though I looovvvve decorating for Christmas, I’ve never really done much decorating for other holidays. In fact, I wrote a whole post years ago about why I don’t decorate for other holidays.

But this year my eight year old changed my mind.

He absolutely adores Halloween and for the past few years he’s been making the cutest little Halloween decorations from paper, tape, and toilet paper rolls. So this year, I decided it was definitely time to join in on the Halloween decorating fun. We’ll still be hanging all his cute homemade decorations, but I also knew he would love it if I did something a bit bigger.

I decided the front porch was the perfect place to start. I started gathering some inspiration and a few weeks ago I shared a post full of awesome Halloween porch ideas from real homes. And now I’m excited to share my own very first Halloween front porch!

This porch has my favorite parts of fall (gorgeous heirloom pumpkins and beautiful fall leaves) layered with a few classic Halloween touches. It isn’t fancy, but I love how it came together and it definitely makes me nostalgic for the Halloweens of my childhood.

I started with those gorgeous piles of pumpkins. There’s a small local pumpkin farm about an hour away from me that grows the most gorgeous pumpkins and they have a killer deal where you can pick your own pumpkins and fill a huge farm wagon for only $40. I used a few wooden stools and plant stands to help give the pumpkins some height.

If you love all the beautiful heirloom pumpkins too, you should check out these free watercolor pumpkin printables I made a few years ago. They’re a super easy, free way to decorate for the season.

I added a pretty fall wreath to the door and a scalloped door mat. I love how the black-edged doormat feels like a nod to Halloween but would also look great all year long. (My doormat is from Marshalls, but this one from Amazon has a similar feel.)

Once the basics were in place, it was time to add the fun Halloween touches. All summer I kept an eye out for fun Halloween decor whenever I hit up a thrift store or yard sale and I was able to find some great deals. I scored the skeleton and the huge spider over the door at yard sales for a great deal. I also grabbed a few classic jack o’lantern buckets at a yard sale. As a child of the 80s who trick or treated with one of these every year, I couldn’t resist.

I also thrifted a set of random fake bones so I added them to a few wooden lanterns I built several years ago. It really adds the perfect creepy touch.

It takes more planning ahead, but if you keep an eye out for used holiday decor in the off season, you can find some killer deals.

Finally I added my huge thrifted spider over the front door. I just used a bit or wire to attach him to a screw that was already there for hanging Christmas garland. (This set of similar spiders is a really great deal).

If you need to hang outdoor decor, these brick hangers are a great option for brick and these vinyl siding hangers are perfect for siding. Best of all, neither require adding any holes to your walls.

Along with the spider, I added some cheap fake spider webs. I like how realistic these spider webs look, but I’ve never used them outdoors before so I’m not entirely sure how well they will hold up. The porch roof keeps this area pretty protected from rain, but a strong wind could cause some issues.

And that is my first ever Halloween front porch! I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out and I’ve already got my wheels turning with a few new ideas I want to try next year. Most importantly, my little Halloween-lover is thrilled. He’s chomping at the bit to do some decorating inside so we’ll probably tackle that this weekend.
