This snowman door hanger was so fun to make and it is a fantastic alternative to hanging a traditional wreath on the door. When I was asked to make my own version of The Home Depot’s seasonal character door hanger, I was pretty excited. I recently decided that I really want to tackle some simple projects to up our home’s curb appeal before winter sets in and this was the perfect start.
One of the things I really love about this project is how easy it is to put your own spin on it by choosing a different character or style. I chose to make a snappy little snowman so that he can hang out on the door all winter long if I want.
This week at your local Home Depot, you can learn to make your own seasonal character door hanger at a fun DIH workshop. (That’s ‘do it herself’ if you didn’t know!) You can register to attend the DIH workshop at your local store by clicking here.
For my own snowman door hanger, I decided to add a touch of rustic farmhouse charm.
I started by painting the hat with a couple of coats of black paint and the face with white paint.
I knew I wanted to accentuate the awesome tongue and groove wood. Once the paint was fully dried, I lightly sanded all of the edges with sandpaper to expose some of the wood below.
Then I rubbed a bit of stain on all of the exposed wood. I used a very dark stain on the black paint and a lighter gray stain on the white paint. I applied the stain by rubbing it on with a rag and then quickly rubbed off any excess with a clean rag. If you want to take off even more of the stain, you can wipe it right off with a rag dipped in mineral spirits.
Then it was time to paint the face. I’ll admit I was nervous about this part. I didn’t want my snowman to look overly cutesy or just plain weird, but it turned out just fine. I kept it simple with two black eyes, a carrot nose, and a lopsided grin. Then I lightly sanded the face to match the rest of the piece.
Then I got to hang it on the door!
He looked cute, but he was missing something. He needed a cute little scarf so I wrapped one of my winter scarves around him. The perfect cozy detail and pop of color!
As soon as my three year old saw it, he said, “Mommy, you made me a snowman!” It really is the simple things that make kids happy.
Don’t forget you can sign up to make your own fun door hanger at your local Home Depot. These DIH workshops are great for newbies as well as more experienced DIYers. I don’t know about you, but a night of power tools with other ladies who are ready to DIY sounds like the perfect girls night out to me! And Home Depot also has plenty of other DIY and even kids workshops scheduled frequently, so be sure to check those out as well.
And don’t miss out on the Seasonal Character Door Hangers these other creative bloggers put together.
