Back in August, I picked up 3 old ladders at the 43 mile yard sale I went to. One was painted a lovely aqua but the other two were pretty rustic. They have been patiently waiting for some love along with the rest of my hoard in the basement. I liked the rustic wood of the old ladders – that is part of their charm. But up close they were a little too rustic – as in splinter city. I sanded the first of the ladders just a bit and decided it was the perfect time to try whitewashing.
I didn’t do anything too fancy – just watered down some white paint and brushed on a few coats until I was happy with it.
Both ladders started out basically the same so seeing the two together really show the difference the whitewash made. I like how it gives the wood a silvery glow while still allowing the wood and paint splatters to show through.
This whitewashed version is currently in my booth at Olde Salem Mercantile. I find these old ladders very charming and will definitely be keeping one for my own home.
Now I just have to decide where to put my own ladder. Anyone else have any great old ladder uses?
